Kanchipuram was ruled by the Pallava dynasty between 600 and 900 AD. Pallavas chose Kanchi as their capital and undertook progressive steps in governance, trade, religion, art, literature and economy of the city.

Kanchipuram is one of the most-ancient cities of southern India and traces its history to the 2nd century bce as an early Chola capital. From the 3rd to the 9th century ce, it was the Pallava capital, and from the 10th to the 13th century, it served as the late Chola government headquarters.

about 1600 years old
Archaeologically, the temple is about 1600 years old going back to the days when the Pallava dynasty ruled this region and Kanchipuram used to be their capital. Kamakshi comes from the conjunction of three words – Ka, Ma & Aksh. Ka means Saraswati, Ma means Lakshmi and Aksh means eyes.

There are various legends that account for this fact. Adi Shankaracharya, the famous 8th century CE scholar and saint, re-established the Sri Chakra in this Kamakshi Devi temple in the trough-like structure in that shrine.

A basic Kanjeevaram saree costs around Rs. 25,000 (and this is just the cost of the silk, the weaving work and the zari border) and the cost can go upto Rs. 40 lakhs.

The goddess Kamakshee is the form of Parvati and Tripura Sundari (another form of Parvati). … Goddess Kamakshi is considered to be the representation of Shri Vidya – Sri Lalita Maha Tripura Sundari – she reigns supreme in Kanchi.

Kanchi is a Hindu / Sanskrit Indian popular unisex given name, which literally means “women’s zone, rosary pea, girdle, zone and shining” in Sanskrit. Another meaning is waistband with bells.
